Christian Ernst Bernhard Morgenstern (* 29 September 1805 in Hamburg; † 26 February 1867 in Munich) was a German landscape painter. Morgenstern is regarded as one of the most important representatives of early painterly realism in Germany.
The painter and etcher Morgenstern began his training in 1824 in Hamburg under S. Bendixen (1786 -1864) and continued from 1827 at the academy in Copenhagen. After travelling to the mountainous regions of Sweden and Norway, he went to Munich in 1829 on the recommendation of the Munich statesman, military officer and philosopher Count Rumohr. He travelled extensively through northern and southern Europe, but settled in Munich and remained there for the rest of his life. He was friends with C. Rottmann (1797-1850), E.N. Neureuther (1806-1882) and E. Schleich the Elder (1812-1874).
