Steel engraving, B.I. Hildburghausen, ca. 1840. View of the Old Courthouse with figures, horse-drawn carriages and riders in the foreground.
The publishing house of the well-known publisher and publicist Carl Joseph Meyer (1796-1856) was based in Hildburghausen from 1828 to 1874. It was responsible for the graphic design of such great publishing successes as “Meyers Conversationslexikon”, “Meyers Universum” or the inexpensive classic editions of the “Miniaturbibliothek” and the “Groschenbibliothek”. Meyer illustrated all of these countless book editions – around 25 million are said to have been printed in Hildburghausen by 1850 – mostly with thousands of copper and steel engravings.
