About the artist

Maurice Utrillo was born in Paris on 26 December 1883, the son of the Parisian painter Suzanne Valadon. Who his father was is unclear. Although he lived with his mother for a long time as a child, he took his adoptive father’s name, the art critic Miquel Utrillo. As a teenager, Maurice Utrillo was an alcoholic and, at the age of 17, underwent a detoxification cure in Sainte-Anne in 1900. Afterward, he was encouraged by his mother to paint and was immediately successful. In 1935 Maurice Utrillo married Lucie Pauwels, the widow of the art collector Pauwels, who also painted under the pseudonym Lucie Valore.

Utrillo died on 5 November 1955 at 71 in Dax during a stay at a health resort and is buried in the Parisian cemetery Cimetière Saint-Vincent on Montmartre.
