About the artist
Hermann Konnerth, whose father was a priest, had a natural talent for fine arts, and painting as a child. Although he studied theology and German in Marburg, Berlin, and Bonn, he was heavily influenced by French post-impressionism. He wrote his dissertation about Immanuel Kant’s Formal Aesthetics in the history of art. Konnerth later decided to spend more time painting than on art theory.
He was interned in France during the First World War, but was allowed to continue his painting. After the war he stayed in his hometown before moving to Berlin. Konnerth never received the recognition that he deserved for his work and died in hardship.
