About the artist
Hans-Joachim Pietrula was born in Duisberg in 1938. As a keen young artist, he held his first exhibition and also won prizes at 15. He spent most of his youth on the island of Rügen and was encouraged to paint by his grandfather who was a church painter. He learned stage painting and received a scholarship to study painting at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen and graduated in 1964.
He opened his first studio in Voerde and in 1976 he founded a painting school in Sulzburg, Germany. Pietrula continued his teaching career and taught at Grünberg, Frankfurt, Karlsruhe, and the Catholic Academy in Freiburg.
Pietrula’s art uses various techniques making use of natural resources and highlighting his observations of people and nature.
He lives and works in Alsace and has been working in glass art design since 1986.
