About the artist
Klimt was an Austrian symbolist painter and a member of the Vienna Secession movement. He is known for his landscape paintings, murals, sketches, and for his paintings of the female body which were influenced by his appreciation of Japanese art and its methods.
Klimt’s work was often considered controversial, when a painting he completed for the ceiling of the Great Hall of the University of Vienna was criticized as pornographic, he refused to do any more public work. His art became popular when he started to incorporate gold colours and gold leaf into his work.
