Alexander von Kotzebue was born on the 9 June 1815 in Königsberg. He was sent to be educated at the Petersburg Cadet Corps and left in 1834 as a lieutenant of the guard. He became interested in art and studied at the Petersburg Academy of Art from 1837 to 1845. He continued to study in Paris from 1847-1848 staying with Emperor Nikolai I, before travelling to Belgium, Holland, Italy. After s short spell in Stuttgart he eventually settled in Munich. He receive the title of professor at the Petersburg Academy of Art in 1857 and later became an honorary member at the Munich Academy of fine arts.
Kotzebau died on 25 August 1889 in Munich
