Christian Ernst Bernhard Morgenstern (born 29 September 1805 in Hamburg; died 26 February 1867 in Munich) was a German landscape painter. Morgenstern is considered one of the most important representatives of early picturesque realism in Germany.
Morgenstern, a painter and etcher, began his training in Hamburg in 1824 under S. Bendixen (1786-after 1864) and continued it at the Academy in Copenhagen from 1827. After travelling in the mountainous regions of Sweden and Norway, he went to Munich in 1829 on the recommendation of Count Rumohr, a Munich statesman, military man and philosopher. After extensive travels through Northern and Southern Europe, he settled in Munich and remained there for the rest of his life. He was friends with C. Rottmann (1797-1850), E.N. Neureuther (1806-1882) and E. Schleich the Elder (1812-1874).
