On the morning of 30 May 1431, Joan was burned to death at the market square in Rouen. Her ashes were scattered in the Seine to prevent her followers from recovering her remains as relics. This was in order to prevent her from being honoured as a martyr.
Nineteen-year-old Joan of Arc, who claimed to have received visions of St Michael the Archangel, St Margaret, and St Catherine, was burned at the stake for heresy by an English-dominated court in 1431. To the end, she claimed that the voices she had heard all her life were of a divine nature.
