Schönbrunn Palace, the residence planned by and for Emperor Joseph I. Empress Maria Theresa converted it into a cosy summer residence for her family in the 18th century. Since 1892, the palace has been located in Vienna’s 13th district, Hietzing. The name Schönbrunn dates back to a saying attributed to Emperor Matthias. He is said to have discovered an artesian spring here in 1619 while hunting and exclaimed with delight: ‘What a beautiful spring!’
