Schönbrunn Palace is a residence planned by and for Emperor Joseph I, which Empress Maria Theresa later had converted into a cosy summer residence for her family in the 18th century. Since 1892, the palace is located in Vienna’s 13th district, Hietzing. The name Schönbrunn refers to a saying attributed to Emperor Matthias. He is said to have discovered an artesian spring here while hunting in 1619 and exclaimed with delight: “What a beautiful fountain!” translated from the German „Welch’ schöner Brunn!“
