Cantler had a great talent for drawing, which is why he is sometimes referred to as an “artist”. He drew many of his bowling club friends – slightly caricaturing them – in classic poses; some of these drawings are now in the Erding town archives and are sometimes exhibited in the town museum. His uniform drawings are even more significant: He drew the uniforms of the Bavarian army from 1800 to 1873 on 96 panels of 12 pictures each. He donated these to the Bavarian War Ministry, and the originals can still be found in the Bavarian War Archives today. This collection was not published until 1976 (67 years after his death) under the title “Der bayerischen Armee sämtliche Uniformen 1800 – 1873” (Bavarian Army’s complete uniforms 1800 – 1873) by Eikon-Verlag in Schwarzbach/Saale as a loose-leaf collection.
