About the artist
Moret was born on 12 December 1856 in Cherbourg. At 19 he was in the military service and his commander, who had noticed his talent for painting, introduced him to the drawing teacher Ernest Corroler. He learned the art of landscape painting and continued his studies learning from well-known painters at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1876.
Several years after his first exhibit was shown at the Paris Salon in 1880 he went to Pont-Aven, a popular place for artists at that time.
Moret moved towards a more artistic style from 1891 and with his good relationship with Paul Durand-Ruel, who had galleries in Europe and the US, his work grew in popularity.
By 1900 Moret’s work took on a more impressionistic style, focussing on shades of light with his sunset and storm paintings.
Moret completed most of his paintings in oil but he also produced more than 700 watercolour pictures too.
Moret died in Paris on 5 May 1913, aged 56.
